The 1924 Double Eagle is the most commonly found coin of this series. Major grading services have assessed only 10% of the more than 4 million coins minted. NGC alone has graded over 100,000 coins in MS 64 condition! Around that time, a large part of Europe was experiencing financial difficulties, so large quantities of this and other dated Double Eagle coins were sent abroad for international banking transactions. Many remained there for decades, and each year, significant numbers of these coins return to the United States. NGC has graded two coins as MS 68, the last of which was sold at auction in 2005 for $48,875.

 

According to the NGC Price Guide, as of February 2025, a 1924 St. Gaudens gold coin in circulated condition is worth between $2,950 and $3,075. However, on the open market, pristine, uncirculated 1924 Double Eagles can sell for as much as $100,000.
