Gold in ancient China symbolized not only worldly but also spiritual wealth. This is reflected in golden Buddha statues and gilded pagodas. The dragon, sometimes crafted from gold, is a distinctive mythical creature of China. The five-clawed dragon symbolized the power and responsibility of emperors, who sought the aid of this magnificent creature to ensure a bountiful harvest. The dragon could be as small as a silkworm or as immense as the distance between heaven and earth. It rides the clouds and can become invisible.

In Chinese culture, dragons have always been a source of fascination, as has the most precious of metals, gold. The earliest gold-decorated artifacts date back to the Shang dynasty (circa 1500–1050 BC). During the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD), as trade flourished along the Silk Road, gold was omnipresent in art and commerce. The emperors of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911 AD) adorned the imperial palace in Beijing with valuable golden items, such as celestial globes, gold-plated instruments for stargazing, and mechanical golden clocks.
