The Royal Australian Mint launched the "Australia Zoo" series in 2020 with the Sumatran Tiger coin. This series aims to draw attention to endangered species and is designed for entry-level collectors and precious metal investors. This year’s "Giraffe" coin is the fifth in the series.
Giraffes are native to Africa and are a near-threatened species due to illegal poaching and the destruction of their ecological habitats. With their impressive size and distinctive patterns, visitors can see them in the African savannah habitat at Australia Zoo in Queensland. These graceful giants can weigh over 1,300 kilograms and grow to more than 5 meters tall. Despite their impressive dimensions, these gentle giants are often found in groups called "towers." Using their long necks and tongues, giraffes consume up to 45 kilograms of leaves per day.
Female giraffes devote significant care to raising their young, with a gestation period lasting nearly 15 months. During this time, the calf fully develops and becomes ready to thrive in the challenging African environment.
