The common side of the coin is the same as that of standard 2 euro circulation coins.
The reverse side features the EU flag at the center, surrounded by silhouettes of people. This design was chosen by EU citizens through an online vote. They could vote for one of five designs shortlisted by a professional committee from 62 submitted works. The winning coin received 30% of the votes, and its author is Georgios Stamatopoulos, a designer from the Bank of Greece.
