The First Statute of Lithuania, the legal code of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, was confirmed by the Seimas of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Grand Duke of Lithuania. It came into effect on September 29, 1529.

The First Statute of Lithuania was prepared under the guidance of the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Mikalojus Mikalojaitis Radvila. The first discussion of the Statute took place at the Vilnius Seimas in 1522, when A. Goštautas was the Chancellor. The authors referred to it as Written Law, and it began to be called the Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the copies translated into Latin and in manuscripts.

The First Statute consists of 13 chapters and 238 articles, covering state, criminal, civil, and other branches of law. The primary sources of the Statute were Lithuanian customary law, privileges of the grand duke, judicial decisions, the Lithuanian Code of Casimir, and the laws of other countries (including Roman law). The provisions of the First Statute, formulated based on customary law, regulated damage compensation for cattle theft, guarantees and inheritance of property, including women's inheritance, the marriage and guardianship of young women, fines and punishments for injury and murder, rules on tracking thieves and administering oaths, monetary settlements, and statutes of limitations. It also addressed military defense, noble privileges, territorial expansion, and other legal institutions. Judges were allowed to follow custom if a specific legal provision was missing from the Statute, but any such customary law provision had to be immediately submitted to the Seimas for approval and inclusion in the Statute.

The reverse features the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilnius Voivode Albertas Goštautas, presenting the Lithuanian Statute to the ruler, Sigismund the Old. Above are the columns of Gediminas, and at the bottom is A. Goštautas' Abdank coat of arms, with the inscription "LIETUVOS STATUTAS, 475" around the image. The obverse shows a historical 16th-century Vytis symbol, similar to the Vytis design published in one of the Statute's copies. Above is the inscription "LIETUVA," with "50 LITŲ" and "2004" at the bottom.
