The Carthusian horse is not a separate horse breed, but a descendant of the pure Spanish horse and is considered the purest breed with one of the oldest stud farms in the world. The Carthusian breed originates from the La Cartuja monastery in Jerez. Since 1484 (and for at least three and a half centuries) the monastery was the epicenter of the Andalusian equine elite, whose horses were venerated and glorified throughout the Western continent.
The obverse of the coin features an image of the Real de a Ocho Columnario (historical Spanish coin).
