The African Wildlife Elephant Series is a tribute to the African savannah elephant, the world's largest land mammal. Since its creation in 1999 series was published with an annually changing depiction of the savannah giant, usually in a distinctive African landscape. The series, which has always been produced by the Bavarian State Mint, was originally issued as a Zambian coin, but in 2004 transferred to Somalia.
In the center of the obverse is the coat of arms of the Federal Republic of Somalia, together with the inscription "SOMALI REPUBLIC", the denomination of the coin "500 SHILLINGS" and the date of issue "2023".
The reverse shows a lone African savannah elephant munching on leaves while reaching for the branches overhead with its long trunk. Traditional African landscape elements appear in the background, including acacia trees, low hills and barren land, with a portion of the sun shining overhead. The stunning desert image is surrounded by a frame with AFRICAN WILDFIFE, ELEPHANT and 5 OZ AG 999.9 lettering.
