The Quarter Eagle was a gold coin issued by the United States with a denomination of two hundred and fifty cents, or two dollars and fifty cents. It was named in 1792. In the Coinage Act, as a derivative of the US ten dollar eagle coin.

The "Indian's head" design and a similar image of the halfling were created by Boston sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. The coin deviated from the minting tradition of other American coins in that it did not have raised edges and the design was recessed into the tablet. The general public did not approve of the experimental and unusual design. Many feared that the recessed surfaces would harbor germs, while others simply thought it was unsightly; for this reason, numismatists have shown little interest in the coin, and uncirculated examples are rare: the coin's overall value has slipped into obscurity. However, collectors later fell in love with the exotic design and the coin is recognized as part of a creative renaissance in American coinage. The Indian head design was produced from 1908 to 1929, and is often counterfeited!
