The obverse features a modern stylized Mariana - the personification of France, liberty, equality, fraternity and reason since the time of the revolution. She wears a Phrygian cap surrounded by a wreath of oak and olive, which represents strength and fortitude on the one hand and peace, victory and fertility on the other. Equality is embedded in the letter E itself, as well as in the repeated sequence of men and women. Gender equality is one of the main foundations of the French Republic.
The reverse of the coin shows the face value of 20 euros, surrounded by two branches - one of oak, the other of laurel, reminiscent of the euro acronym. The entire model is framed by a set of lines representing a hexagon.
