Austria was the last in Europe to switch to the gold standard, except that all its gold coins were minted under Francis Joseph. The coins of the Austrian Empire (kingdoms and countries officially represented in the Imperial Council) were minted at the Vienna Mint. After the compromise, during the monarchy each denomination had a Hungarian and an Austrian version. Due to the linguistic problems caused by the mixed ethnic composition of the provinces, the inscriptions on gold coins appeared in Latin, which, in addition to political neutrality, spoke of Roman continuity, stability and grandeur.
