The coin celebrates Canada's dedication to world peace. Lady Peace is seen crowned with maple leaves. Her vision is accompanied by "PAX 2024" and Canada's national motto: "A MARI USQUE AD MARE" - From sea to sea. The obverse design features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
International recognition of Canada's efforts to create a more peaceful world began in 1957 when Lester B. Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize. Then Canada's Secretary of State for External Affairs, LB Pearson, helped resolve the Suez crisis by creating the world's first large-scale United Nations peacekeeping force.
Over the next 40 years, Canada's contribution to UN peacekeeping became an integral part of the country's international role. In 1988, the UN received the Nobel Peace Prize for decades of peacekeeping. By that time, almost 80,000 peacekeepers had contributed in Canada.
