These days there are several daily flights to the Caribbean island of Aruba, but 100 years ago this was not the case. In 1923, the first two planes landed at Paardenbaai Harbor in Oranjestad, Aruba. This is how aviation was born in Aruba: from 1934 commercial flights also started on the island. Only 6 passengers could be carried between Aruba and Curacao once a week. in 1942 a small building was built to serve as a terminal. Since then, Aruba Airport has been expanded and modernized. Currently, passengers fly from Queen Beatrix International Airport to more than thirty destinations in more than ten countries.
In 2023 Aruba is celebrating 100 years of aviation. The Royal Netherlands Mint issues a special commemorative coin: 5 Aruban Florins "100th Anniversary of Aruban Aviation"; the coin was commissioned by the Central Bank of Aruba.
