1866 16 hairdressers launched a raid from Fuzhou, China, on May 26-28. After a long, 99-day journey, on September 5, clippers Taiping and Ariel took the pilots on board the Thames 10 minutes apart. There was a lot of hype about it in the press, and the owners of Taiping shared the award with the owners of Ariel. And the captain of Taiping shared the personal award with the captain of Ariel.
The design of this coin is based on a painting by the famous British sailor Jack Sperling. It depicts two sailboats approaching the finish line in the English Channel after a three-month shoulder-to-shoulder race. Their sails, full of wind, are made with amazingly realistic relief.
The new Smartminting © technology allows you to create unprecedented high coin relief. And this impressive coin, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Great Tea Race, takes full advantage of the new technology.
The obverse depicts a portrait of Elizabeth II, the denomination of the coin and the year of issue.
The reverse depicts an offshore ship. At the top of the coin is its name, "THE GREAT TEA OF 1866 TEA".
