Leopold II of Belgium ruled from 1865 to 1909. Gold coins were issued from 1867 to 1882.
The obverse features a bust of King Leopold II facing right. The writing LEOPOLD II ROI DES BELGES (Leopold II King of the Belgians) surrounds the bust. The designer's initials LW are below the bust along with the date.
The reverse has the Belgian arms with the French legend L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE (Unity makes Strength) around the top. The denomination is at the bottom of the arms.
The edge has raised 5-pointed stars with the raised lettering - DIEU PROTEGE LA BELGIQUE.
These coins have been issued in two different types. Type one from 1867 to 1870 and second type from 1870 to 1882. In second type there is a redesigned portrait, he is shown with a slightly longer but coarser beard a different shaped truncation at the neck, and other small differences including larger lettering and date numerals. 1870 occurs in both types.
